Program Description

CRF's Expanding Horizons Internships places qualified urban students from the Los Angeles area as paid interns in law firms, businesses, government offices, and non-profit organizations. Open to sophomores and juniors during their out-of-school months, the program is offered three times a year to accommodate students in Los Angeles' year-round school systems. Each paid internship program lasts seven weeks. Interns work at job sites for six out of the seven weeks. During the first and last week and every Friday of each program, participants take part in educational seminars.

To be accepted into the program, students must (1) complete a written application, (2) submit a transcript and two letters of recommendation, (3) write an essay, and (4) pass two rounds of interviews.

Program Goals

Expanding Horizons Internships is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective participation in our democratic society through:

• Professional development. Through job site experiences, interns work side-by-side with attorneys, government representatives, and non-profit professionals, forming lasting relationships with adult mentors. This is reinforced during seminars through professionalism and communication activities as-well-as weekly career reflection.
• 
  Civic engagement. Weekly seminars enable interns to work together to identify, research, and analyze community issues and to serve as youth advocates in meetings with local government representatives.
• 
  Educational preparation. College opportunities are explored through workshops on SAT preparation, the college application process, financial aid, and campus life.
