What Is Service-Learning? | LA Service-Learning Partnership |Training & Technical Assistance | Resources | Calendar | Contact Us
The mission of the Regional Service-Learning Network (11) is to promote students' academic excellence and ethic of service through the teaching strategy of service learning. The network provides support, training, and technical assistance to build capacity for school-based service-learning among schools, colleges, businesses, and community-based organizations throughout Los Angeles County.
Educators and community-service programs across the country continue to discover that service learning is a useful strategy that offers unique opportunities to engage young people in service activities that renew or develop their “ethic of civic responsibility.” Research suggests that participants of quality service-learning programs exhibit improved civic skills and attitudes, a sense of responsibility for helping others, acceptance of diversity, and a lasting commitment to volunteering and other forms of civic participation. At the same time, service learning can prove useful in helping to achieve national, and in many cases, state civic-educational standards.
