Building Civic-Education Coalitions

This issue of Service-Learning NETWORK explores coalition building as a means to more effective civic engagement. In our Lead Article, Terry Pickeral, Executive Director of the National Center for Learning and Citizenship (NCLC), writes about building coalitions to meet a broad range of civic-education goals. Talking Points highlights a compelling rationale for civic education (put forth by the Civic Mission of Schools report) that carries great coalition-building potential for use with local business leaders, policy makers, community groups, and individuals who may not have a background in education. Project Profiles, visits several  Civic Mission of Schools  State Campaign Teams who are exploring new ways measure civic competencies, standardize approaches, and build effective civic-education partnerships. FYI features summary findings and access to four national civic-education studies and their recommendations for advancing civic renewal.
