Online Project Three: Mediation Teach-in

Handout One--Action Steps

For your Teach-In project, you will help younger students learn about mediation skills. Mediation is when a neutral person or group helps people in conflict to reach a peaceful agreement. You will need four student mentors to present a play (Handout Three--Mediation Play) to the younger students, or you will need to work with younger students' teacher to identify three students who can read the play to the class with you.

Action Steps

1. Read Handout Two--Lesson Plan.

2. Identify a group of younger students you will work with. Decide if you will:

  • Recruit other student mentors from your peer group to help you perform the play, or…
  • Work with the younger students' teacher to identify volunteers from the class to help you.

3. Spend time preparing to teach the lesson. Study each step of the lesson ahead of time so you will be ready to work with the younger students.

4. Go to the site and teach the lesson. After the lesson, ask the younger students' teacher to sign the Check Point.

5. Complete the Stop and Think section. Keep track of the hours you spend on the project.

6. Hand in your completed project handout to your teacher.

Stop and Think

• What important things did the young people learn from your presentation?

• How did you do as a teacher?

• Do you think knowing about mediation skills is helpful in staying out of trouble? Why or why not?

• What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
