The History Day program operates on a series of levels: county, state, and national. Students may create a History Day project without entering a History Day contest, but many do choose to compete. At each level, student entries are evaluated against other entries in the same division and category. Experts in history, education, and related fields determine the top entries in each division and category that then advance to the next level.
