CityWorks

The CityWorks program is based on a standards-based, local government curriculum designed to fit into any civics or government class. An independent, multi-year, research-based study released in 2002 compared students in traditional government classes to those in CityWorks classes. The study concluded that those in CityWorks classes had greater knowledge of both regular and local government content. CityWorks students also had increased civic competencies, which leave them better prepared for effective citizenship.

In the CityWorks program’s interactive lessons, students become citizens of the fictional city of Central Heights and learn about issues of state and local government and practice critical-thinking skills. Along the way they take on the role of local political leaders and active citizens to address political and social issues facing the community.

Students also take part in CityWorks project activities. These activities and assignments help students explore problems, institutions, and public-policy issues in their own community. Students are guided through a civics-based service-learning project that addresses a local community problem they have studied.

The CityWorks curriculum consists of:

  • A teacher’s guide with reproducible masters for the lessons and activities. The guide has everything a teacher needs.
  • Optional features:

    Student handbooks for the activities.

Tabloid-formatted copies of a simulated newspaper for the lessons.

CityWorks Links provide online help for all the lessons and activities.
