Russia, which extends throughout both Europe and
Asia, is the largest country in the world at 6,592,734 square
miles (17,075,200 square kilometers). Moscow, the nation’s
capital, lies in the European part of Russia. Russia’s
population is 146 million, most of which is comprised of ethnic
Russians.

The country’s official language is Russian,
and students also study foreign languages such as English, French,
German, and Spanish. The main religion of Russia is the Russian
Orthodox Church, with half of Russia’s population belonging
to that church. Other churches are allowed to exist in
Russia only if they can prove that they have been in Russia
for a long time and are registered with the proper Russian authorities.
Other popular religions in Russia include the Jewish and Islamic
faiths.
When greeting others, most Russians shake hands
and say hello, good day, good morning, or good evening.
Russians are introduced by their full name. They call
each other by their given name at work or when addressing a
superior or elder. When visiting one’s friends,
one brings an odd number of flowers, as even numbers are for
funerals.
Russia’s education system is free and required
for those between the ages of six and 17. Once done with
the mandatory education, students can attend one of Russia’s
500 universities, medical schools, and technical academies.
